Sleep dysfunction is a sleep disorder that occurs when someone is unable to fall asleep, stay asleep, or both. It can be a result of lifestyle factors such as being overly stressed, consuming caffeine late into the night, or having a poor sleep routine. It can also be a result of health conditions such as anxiety, depression, or chronic pain. Hypnosis is an alternative therapy that has been used to help people who are struggling with sleep dysfunction. It involves a practitioner guiding the patient into a deeply relaxed state using verbal cues. Once the patient is in this relaxed state, the practitioner can then help the patient to explore the psychological causes of their sleep disturbance, and work on reducing any anxiety or negative thought patterns that may be causing the disruption. Hypnosis has also been used to help with insomnia. Studies have indicated that hypnosis can be effective in helping people with sleep dysfunction. A review of eight studies found that hypnosis was effective in reducing sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep) and increasing total sleep time in those who were suffering from insomnia. Some research has also suggested that hypnosis can be a useful tool in combination with cognitive behavioural therapy for those with chronic insomnia.
